Lena Horne - Voices of Jazz

Lena Horne achieved fame in the 1940s and became a jazz recording star in the 1950s. After appearing in the Broadway musical “Blackbirds” (1939) she joined the Charlie Barnet Orchestra as lead singer until 1942. Then a long run at the Savoy-Plaza Hotel nightclub in 1943 gave Horne’s career a boost. She moved to Hollywood successfully starring in “Thousand Cheer” (1943), “Broadway Rhythm” (1944) and “Two Girls and a Sailor” (1944). She was a true legendary singer, dancer, actress and civil rights activist and was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989.
