Maurice Winnick - Shy

Maurice Winnick presents: Shy. Maurice Winnick was born in Manchester in 1902 he was considered a child prodigy when studying violin at the Royal Northern College of Music. His initial involvement as band leader started in early 1930s in cinematic orchestras generally accompanying silent films, as well as a band leader of several entertainment orchestras on transatlantic liners.

During the Second World War, Winnick then truly established himself as one of the most influential band leaders in Great Britain. His band saw the influence of individual artists such as Sam Costa, Judy Shirley, and the legendary singer Al Bowlly. In 1940 his orchestra included also Ted Heath playing trombone who later started his own successful Jazz Big Band.
At the end of World War II, Maurice decided to move into a career as TV show producer.

Many critics feel that his band had the most distinctive sound of any British dance orchestra of the 30s and 40s setting him apart from his contemporaries such as Guy Lombardo and Harry Roy.
